Free. Files travel over HTTPS and are deleted within 24 hours.

Free – No sign-up – Full result

Free, full diff

No page limits, no watermark, no account. The complete difference report renders right on the page.

Word-level highlights

Edited lines are paired up and the exact changed words are marked, so a one-number edit in a clause cannot hide.

Private by design

Files travel over HTTPS, are used only to produce your diff and are deleted within 24 hours.

Nothing to install

Runs in any modern browser. Two 50 MB PDFs compare in seconds.

How it works

1

Upload both versions

The original PDF on the left, the updated one on the right. Up to 50 MB each.

2

Text is aligned

Both documents are read and their lines aligned structurally, so moved paragraphs do not drown the real edits.

3

Read the changes

Green means added, red means removed, and edited lines show the exact words that changed. Unchanged runs collapse so you see the edits, not the noise.

Reading two versions side by side is how errors survive

Version 3 arrives "with small edits". Reading it next to version 2 feels diligent, but eyes skip: a changed deadline, a quietly dropped clause, one digit in an amount. A structural diff has no such blind spots – every line of both documents is accounted for, and whatever differs is marked. What took an evening of careful reading becomes a two-minute review of the highlighted parts.

The comparison is deliberately text-first: it aligns the documents by content, pairs up edited lines, and marks the changed words inside them. Unchanged stretches collapse, so a forty-page agreement with three edits reads as exactly three highlights plus context.

PDF diff for the documents that matter

Contracts and their annexes are the classic case – for redline-style review of Word originals, use Compare Word Documents, and for a checklist of what to look at when comparing agreement versions, see how to compare contracts. Scanned paperwork becomes comparable after OCR PDF adds a text layer. And when the question is not "what changed" but "is this clause dangerous", hand the file to Contract Analysis.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare two PDF files for differences?

+

Upload the original and the updated PDF above and press Compare. The text of both is extracted and aligned, and every addition, removal and edit is highlighted side by side.

Can I see a PDF diff of just the changed words?

+

Yes – that is the default view. Lines that were edited (rather than added or removed outright) are paired, and inside them the changed words are marked, exactly like a code diff does it.

Does diff PDF comparison work on scanned documents?

+

Scans have no text layer, so a direct comparison would see two empty documents. Run each scan through OCR PDF first – it adds a searchable text layer – then compare the two searchable files here. The comparison itself stays free.

Is the comparison layout-based or text-based?

+

Text-based. Formatting-only changes (fonts, margins) are ignored, which is what you want when checking whether the CONTENT of a contract or report changed between versions.

Can I compare a PDF with a Word document?

+

Convert the Word file to PDF first with the free Word to PDF tool, or compare two DOCX files directly with Compare Word Documents.

What happens to my files afterwards?

+

Both files and the comparison result are deleted within 24 hours. Nothing is retained or used for anything beyond producing your diff.
