OCR PDF

Make a scanned PDF searchable: OCR reads every page and adds an invisible text layer to the same file. Search works, copy works, the scan looks exactly as before. Up to 50 pages per file, price shown on the button.

Requires a free account. New accounts get 500 welcome credits.

500 free welcome credits

This AI feature runs on credits. Every new account starts with 500 free credits, enough for several runs.

Private by design

Files travel over HTTPS and are deleted from the server right after processing. We keep no copy of your documents.

Accepts PDF

Upload straight from your device; the result is ready to download in seconds.

Nothing to install

Runs in any modern browser on desktop and mobile. Typical files finish in seconds.

How it works

1

Upload the scanned PDF

A scan from a copier, a phone-scanned contract, an old archive file – any image-only PDF up to 50 pages.

2

OCR reads every page

High-accuracy text recognition processes each page, including tables and multi-column layouts.

3

Download the searchable PDF

The same document, same look, plus an invisible text layer: search in any viewer, copy text, index it in document systems.

A scan you cannot search is a filing cabinet without labels

Every business keeps scanned PDFs: signed contracts, invoices, certificates, old correspondence. The pixels are all there, but Ctrl+F finds nothing, document systems cannot index them, and "which of these forty scans mentions the deposit" means opening all forty. OCR fixes this once per document: the recognized text is embedded into the same PDF as an invisible layer, and from then on the file behaves like a born-digital document.

The recognition engine reads the page as a whole – columns, tables, headers – rather than line by line, which is what keeps reading order sensible in the extracted text. That same order is what search, copy-paste and AI tools consume.

Searchable beats retyped

The output is deliberately conservative: the scan itself is untouched, so nothing can be misdrawn, and the document remains a faithful copy of what was signed. When the goal is editing rather than archiving, convert the scan to Word with PDF to Word. And once a scan is searchable, the text tools work on it: compare two versions with Compare PDF, ask questions with Chat with PDF, or keep it findable long-term in the vault.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a scanned PDF searchable?

+

Upload it above and download the result. The pages stay exactly as scanned; an invisible text layer with the recognized text is added on top, which is what makes search and copy work in Preview, Acrobat, browsers and document management systems.

Does the PDF still look like the original?

+

Yes, pixel for pixel. OCR does not redraw the document – it only adds a hidden layer. Stamps, signatures and handwriting marks all stay visible as they were.

Where exactly will a search hit point?

+

The text layer is added per page in reading order, so search finds the right page and the text copies out cleanly. The highlight position within the page is approximate rather than glued to each word – a tradeoff of keeping the original scan untouched.

Which languages are recognized?

+

Recognition handles most languages. The embedded text layer covers Latin-script languages (English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese and others); characters outside that set are recognized but skipped in the hidden layer.

What does OCR cost?

+

A flat credit price per document of up to 50 pages, shown on the button before you run it, charged only when the conversion succeeds. New accounts start with 500 welcome credits.

I need editable text, not a searchable scan. What then?

+

Use PDF to Word: it converts scans into an editable DOCX. Use OCR PDF when the document must stay a faithful PDF – contracts, filings, archive copies – but has to become findable.
